The Pet Corner
Animal-Assisted Therapy Work
If you think your dog has the personality to help the
elderly and the physically disabled in the Tri-State area,
then you should know that the ASPCA is hosting three
"therapy dog" classes during the month of April at the
Manhattan headquarters (92nd Street) to prepare your dog.
The courses begin on Saturday, April 7, and will run for six
weeks. To register, you can either go online to ASPCA.org,
or contact Stephanie Smith at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4354 for
more information.
Pet Poison Prevention
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals is trying to raise awareness during National Poison
Prevention Week, March 18-24. The ASPCA advises pet parents
to stay alert to the dangers posed by the following:
Human Medications
- Common human drugs such as painkillers, cold
medications, antidepressants and dietary supplements top
the list. NEVER give your pet any medication without the
direction of a veterinarian.
Insecticides
- Products used to kill fleas, ticks and other insects
should used by following label instructions exactly.
Veterinary Medications
- According to Dr. Steven Hansen "Many medications are
intended for use in certain species only, and
potentially serious problems could result if given to
the wrong animal or at too high a dose."
If you would like to become a member of the ASPCA
community, or volunteer at a local shelter, please log on to
